Etch-a-Sketch (for the QL) - Jim Waterman

I have a horrible feeling that Etch-a-Sketch apps are going to become the lawnmower simulator. Since I have already reviewed one Etch-a-Sketch app at the start of this contest I am not going to go into deep detail on my thoughts on Etch-a-Sketch apps. Instead, I'll look at how they differ.

The most obvious difference is that this is for the QL.

I only used Qemulator for this review and followed the very helpful instructions for noobs contained in the package. After connecting the directory to microdrive 1 and running LRUN mdv1_etch_bas I faced a brief pause before being offered the choice between Etch-A-Sketch Classic or Super Awesome Colour Etch-A-Sketch.
Note the subtle shading under heading

The difference being the range of colours you can use. Movement is controlled by cursor keys and there is the ability via presing m to jump to a new screen location (Note the input isn't verified when you type in the new coordinates causing the program to bomb if you enter something silly). Movement is very slow and occasionally locks up requiring you to release the key you are pressing and then press it again. I don't know if this is an emulator quirk or a program quirk.

Bad input

The ability to easily save your masterpieces is helpful, as is the file extension, which prevents you from loading drawings from one mode into another. Easier drawing of diagonals is also welcome.

Taking a quick look at the listing helped me appreciate how far BASIC moved on from the original Spectrum Basic. The code for the PLOT routines which inspired this entry could be written in Romulan to a Sinclair noob like myself.

In all for 320ish lines of BASIC this is a fairly functional Etch-A-Sketch.

As with all of Jim's entries, the accompanying notes are worth reading.

Obviously the only way to judge the merits of this entry is to pit it up against the previous Etch-A-Sketch.

Technical Ability - 50%

Both entries are written in BASIC, however, where one added polish in the form of music and loading screens this one focuses a little more on presentation. The lack of ability to save your masterpiece has been addressed in this version.

Achievement - 50%

As a basic Etch-A-Sketch this works, as a crap game it fails.

Fun - 5%

It is still Etch-A-Sketch.

Crap Factor - 75%

Colour, ability to save and on-screen help nudge it up from the truly crap pile.

Roundup

Pros -
2 Modes to chose from if you want extra colour in your life
The ability to save your work
Overall presentation

Cons -
No desire to replay/reuse
It is Etch A Sketch

Remember I play these games so you don't have to. Should you play this game I bear no responsibility for your mental health afterwards. Should the warnings not be enough you can download and play it here.
